Seed to Supper is an eight-week summer program in collaboration with D.C. Parks and Recreation that provides 8-12-year-olds in D.C. with an intensive gardening and environmental science experience. The 25-35 children meet at the Youth Garden twice a week in July and August during the garden’s most magical and productive moments to cultivate the soil and learn about healthy living. Using produce from the garden, the program incorporates multiple disciplines such as nutrition and taste education from local chefs through the Capital Area Food Bank’s Operation Frontline. In addition, the children visit a variety of educational sites including local farms and environmental education centers. The program culminates in a final harvest and visit to D.C. Central Kitchen, where the children donate their surplus produce to emphasize the connection between gardens and community.
